Renee Rosnes’ distinguished career continues to reach new heights, marked by new music, compelling collaborations, and ever-evolving artistry. After moving to New York from Vancouver, Canada in 1985, the pianist and composer quickly established an international reputation, touring and recording with jazz luminaries such as Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, JJ Johnson, Bobby Hutcherson and James Moody. She was a ten year member of the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, and a founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective, with whom she toured and recorded for six years.
In 1990, Rosnes released her eponymously-titled debut album on Blue Note Records, and went on to record ten albums for the storied label. To date, she has released 19 solo albums, and appeared on countless recordings as a sought-after sideperson.
As a composer, Rosnes has written over one hundred compositions for small and large groups, as well as repertoire specifically for vocalists. She has been commissioned by SFJAZZ, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Tisch Center for the Arts, and the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra. Her music has been performed by such artists as Paquito D’Rivera, Phil Woods, JJ Johnson, Joe Locke, and Michael Dease among others.
In 2020, she returned to Blue Note with ARTEMIS, the acclaimed ensemble she founded, featuring trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, tenor saxophonist Nicole Glover, bassist Noriko Ueda, drummer Allison Miller and Rosnes, as pianist and musical director. ARTEMIS was named Jazz Group of the Year for three consecutive years (2023-2025) in Downbeat’s Annual Readers Poll. The band’s third release, Arboresque was widely praised by critics for its “cliché-free individuality and congenial collective spirit radiantly combined” and hailed as, “one of the year’s best.” In May 2025, the band appeared on NPR’s popular Tiny Desk Concert Series.
In 2018, the Montréal Jazz Festival honored Rosnes with the Oscar Peterson Prize in recognition of her exceptional contributions to jazz. She is also a 15-year member of legendary bassist Ron Carter’s Foursight Quartet; Ron Carter: Live in Stockholm, Vol. 1. & Vol. 2 (In+Out Records) was released in 2020.
Rosnes’ 2021 release, Kinds of Love (Smoke Sessions) won Rosnes her 7th JUNO Award with All About Jazz writing, “Rosnes elicits some of the most emotive and enthralling music of her career.” Her 2025 recording, Crossing Paths (Smoke Sessions) is a Brazilian-inspired project featuring among others, Chico Pinheiro on guitar, Chris Potter on saxes, John Patitucci on bass, vocalist Maucha Adnet, and legendary singer-songwriters, Edu Lobo and Joyce Moreno. The album spent six weeks at No. 1 on the JazzWeek National Radio charts, and has been nominated for a 2026 JUNO award for Jazz Album of the Year. Rosnes was also featured on the cover ofDownbeat magazine’s January 2025 issue accompanied by the cover story: “Brazilian Dreams Come True.”
Rosnes is married to renowned pianist Bill Charlap. The Charlap/Rosnes duo was featured on four tracks of the 2015 GRAMMY winning album: Tony Bennett & Bill Charlap: The Silver Lining, The Songs of Jerome Kern. Of the couple’s piano duo recording, Double Portrait (Blue Note), the Globe and Mail observed, “That the two are husband and wife makes this session extra special. Both are exceptional players, matching flawless technique with effortless lyricism, and their playing intermingles beautifully, with one phrase sparking another and ideas bouncing from soloist to accompanist and back.”
